Breaking news: Reuters has reported that Viacom Inc. will be suing Google and YouTube (GooTube, for the fellow portmanteau lovers) for the amount of ONE BILLION dollars in damages for “massive intentional copyright infringement.”
Says the report:
“Viacom contends that almost 160,000 unauthorized clips of its programming have been uploaded onto YouTube’s site and viewed more than 1.5 billion times….Viacom said its decision to sue Google followed ‘a great deal of unproductive negotiation’ with the company.”
Is this the beginning of the end, or just a little burp? I know that YouTube’s tried fairly decently to delete all Viacom material (such as the “lovely, but illegal” supply of Daily Show and Colbert Report content on YouTube), so this comes as a bit of a surprise.
How do you think that this one will pan out?
